Ukraine ranks first in Europe and fifth in the world in honey production, according to the Office of Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration – Atlantic Ivana Klimbush Tsentsadze.

The message says: “Our country produces more than 100,000 tons per year, or 6% of the world’s honey. Today in Ukraine there are about 400 thousand beekeepers, representing 4 million beehives.”

The main producers of honey are the regions of Vinnitsa, Donetsk, Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhia, Zhytomyr, Mykolaiv, Poltava and Kirovograd, which produce 70% of Ukrainian honey, are delivered to 35 countries in the world.

The honey market in Ukraine is one of the most promising markets in the agricultural sector in our country. Ukraine accounts for about 6% of the global production of honey, which is exported to 22 countries in the world. Now Ukraine ranks first in honey production domestically, and third in the world. Since 2015, domestic products have been actively sold in the markets of China, Hungary, Belgium and Azerbaijan. In general, over the past decade, Ukraine has managed to increase honey exports to the EU seven times.

Market experts claim that this is not the limit, because the EU is the world’s largest consumer of honey. Every year, Europeans eat 150,000 tons of honey, accounting for 27% of total global consumption.

Total honey production in Ukraine is 70 thousand tons per year. However, after the annexation of Crimea, the index fell to 66.5 thousand tons in 2014 and 63.6 thousand tons in 2015.

The demand of foreign markets for a sweet product and the possibility of producing honey in Ukraine promises great opportunities for entrepreneurs. Analysts say the creation of a new complex for processing honey in Ukraine is a useful and profitable investment. The capacity of the enterprise should be 20,000 kg / day or 5000 tons per year. According to the company’s analysts’ calculations, the amount of investment in such an institution will be between 1-2 million euros. 60-65% of this amount is needed to buy honey, 18-19% will be spent on equipment purchase, 7-8% to buy the production line, 10% will be other costs. According to experts, the payback period for the project will be 1-1.5 years, and the return on sales will be from 23 to 25%.

Recall that in 2016 the share of honey export to the EU amounted to about 5 thousand tons, in fact, about 12 thousand tons were imported. “Because a larger share of honey has been provided to the rations than it could have covered, all companies received approximately 35-37% of the declared production in the form of a preferential quota.” Sergei Green, CEO of the Ukrainian Honey Group, says The year is about 5200 tons.
