In Ukraine, new timber quality standards have been operating since January 2019,
Ukraine’s forest industry has turned to European standards for the classification and measurement of forest products and sawdust.
They dramatically changed the approach to determining the properties of timber.
If previous commercial timber (round timber) in Ukraine is distributed in three grades (I, II and III) and have a number of grades according to their purpose, they will be distributed from 2019 to four quality categories (A, B, C, D), and in countries European, with no definition of the direction of use.
New national standards harmonized with European standards were developed by the Technical Committee of Ukraine for the Consolidation of Forest Resources “Forest Resources”
The classification principle under the European Roundwood Standardization System is not based on the designation of shapes, but is based on indicators of the size and quality of records;
The largest diameter and minimum content of wood defects with a specific increase – the highest quality category: to class A, it is usual to classify timber of the highest quality category, which comes mostly from the bottom of the log, with clean wood or with simple defects do not limit Use it;
Middle-class quality timber is usually classified as Class B, without any special requirements for pure wood and knots within the average value of each species;
It is customary to classify wood under the medium quality category as Class C, where these defects that slightly reduce the natural properties of wood are solved as materials;
Category D shall include the quality of wood products that do not meet any of the quality categories A, B, C,

But more timber can be obtained for further use; all other round timber, which is impossible to obtain for general use, is classified as:
 A) wood for industrial use, length 2.0-4.0 m (production of wood chips for technological or fuel purposes, dividing them into fuel wood, etc.);
 B) Wood for non-industrial use, with a length of up to 2.0 meters (can be sold to individuals and legal entities as fuel). It should be noted that the transition to national standards harmonized with European standards

The transition to the standardization of the new standards is due to the development of new technologies for wood processing and European integration processes in Ukraine’s forest industry.
